Step 2: Determine the Website’s Purpose
September 28, 2008
What do you want your photography Website to do?
- Showcase your work?
- Sell your work and services to potential customers?
- Promote special packages and offers to new clients?
- Sell photographs to existing customers, such as photographs from weddings and senior sessions you’ve shot?
Before you build your Website, determine its purpose. Then build the site to suit the purpose.
Each page must accomplish the purpose. If you are selling your work, then be sure each page motivates visitors to buy. If it is rousing emotion, then each page must heighten visitors’ senses. If you’re selling your expertise in unstaged storytelling wedding photography, then the couple — the purchasers – must be able to visualize their wedding being captured as romantically and as appealing as those you have on your Website. In short, each page must work hard to not just meet but exceed visitor expectations.
Why does this work?

This collage style board from a wedding Aaron Delesie shot, which is shown on Style Me Pretty, a blog site for the style-obsessed bride, is a terrific way to display work on a Website. It not only shows how he captures the event, but it also demonstrates his expert eye for detail, his mix of black and white and color photography, and his ability to tell a memorable, romantic story through the lens. It grabs the viewer emotionally and sells every single picture. Alone, many of these pictures wouldn’t sell, but together, they are an unbeatable package.
Remember, a Website is much more than a brochure. You can incorporate sight, sound and words to weave a story that moves your visitors to your ultimate goal. A Web professional can assist you in creating magic moments that suit your purpose.
